Ball cactus (Parodia magnifica) can be grown as an indoor plant. It is a small, slow-growing, and low-maintenance cactus with a spherical or columnar shape. The ball cactus produces attractive yellow flowers and makes an excellent indoor plant, adding texture and interest to any room.

A ball cactus can live for many years, even decades, with proper care. The lifespan of a cactus depends on various factors, including care, environmental conditions, and the specific species.

To take care of a ball cactus, follow these guidelines:

1. Light: Provide bright, direct sunlight for at least 4-6 hours per day. A south-facing or west-facing window is ideal for indoor ball cacti. Insufficient light can cause the plant to become weak and elongated.
2. Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water the cactus sparingly, especially during the winter months, when the plant is dormant. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause the cactus to shrivel.
3. Temperature: Ball cacti prefer temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) during the day and slightly cooler temperatures at night. They can tolerate short periods of cooler temperatures but are sensitive to frost and extreme cold.
4. Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix. The soil should have good aeration to prevent root rot and promote healthy root growth.
5. Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, diluted fertilizer designed for cacti during the growing season (spring and summer), once every 4-6 weeks. Avoid fertilizing during the winter months.
6. Repotting: Repot your ball cactus every 2-3 years or when the container becomes too small. Use a well-draining cactus mix and a pot with drainage holes.

As for edibility, ball cacti are not typically considered edible. While some cactus species have edible parts, like the fruit of the prickly pear cactus (Opuntia spp.) or the pads of some Opuntia species, the ball cactus is not known for being edible or consumed as food.
